Herndon Fine Art offers authenticated Jasper Johns fine art, including rare hand-signed limited edition lithographs, iconic Pop Art etchings, and seminal American modernist masterworks.
Universally celebrated as one of the most influential and revolutionary artists of the twentieth century, American painter, sculptor, and printmaker Jasper Johns (b. 1930) fundamentally transformed the trajectory of modern art by bridging Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Conceptualism. Born in Augusta, Georgia, Johns spent his youth in South Carolina before moving to New York City in 1949, where he studied briefly at the Parsons School of Design and became immersed in the avant-garde circle that included composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham. In the mid-1950s, Johns shocked the art world with his radical choice of subject matter: familiar, flat, culturally ubiquitous signs and symbols such as the American flag, target, numbers, alphabet letters, and beer cans. By rendering these iconic motifs with rich, textured encaustic and layered paint, Johns emptied them of their conventional propaganda or commercial value, inviting viewers to contemplate how we perceive meaning, representation, and visual surfaces. Beyond his monumental paintings, Johns is universally revered as a master printmaker who spent decades at workshops like Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) pushing the technical boundaries of lithography, etching, aquatint, woodcut, and linocut. Working across encaustic, oil, charcoal, multi-pass lithography, and intaglio, his technique pairs meticulous craftsmanship with profound semiotic inquiry. Herndon Fine Art specializes in acquiring and evaluating original Jasper Johns prints, hand-signed limited edition lithographs, etchings, and graphic portfolios. Every piece in our gallery inventory undergoes thorough physical inspection to verify paper conservation, plate impressions, and signature authenticity.
