Artist Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: Keith Haring Biography

Answer: From Subways to Superstardom

Keith Haring (1958–1990) was a Pennsylvania-born master who turned the New York City subway system into his personal laboratory. His "no-smoke" training began at the School of Visual Arts (SVA), but his true education occurred in the streets, where he used white chalk to draw on black paper-covered subway billboards. Alongside friends like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf, Haring became a central figure in the 1980s East Village scene. His style—characterized by thick black outlines and vibrant, flat colors—was a modern evolution of the line-work found in Egyptian hieroglyphics and Mayan art. In 1986, he opened the Pop Shop in Soho, a move that brought high art to the masses but was initially criticized by the art establishment. Before his untimely death from AIDS-related complications, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation to continue his legacy of social activism and support for children’s organizations.

At Herndon Fine Art, we have been a primary source for Keith Haring for 40 years. Our collection is a vetted selection of Vetted Consignments and Vetted Dealer Networks, focusing on his lifetime hand-signed serigraphs and iconic "Pop Shop" releases. Because Haring’s work was often produced on varied substrates like vinyl, tarpaulin, and wood, our vetting process ensures that the structural integrity and ink saturation have been preserved to museum standards. We stand behind every signature with our A+ BBB commitment.

Question: What is the difference between Hand-Signed and Estate-Signed?

Answer: "Lifetime" works were hand-signed and dated by Keith Haring before 1990. After his death, the Keith Haring Estate authorized the release of certain editions which were "Estate Signed" (usually on the verso) by a representative of the Foundation. At Herndon Fine Art, we clearly distinguish between these two in your database, as Lifetime signatures carry a significant premium.

Question: Why is the "Andy Mouse" series so highly valued?

Answer: This series is a "no-smoke" tribute to his mentor Andy Warhol, merging Warhol’s face with Mickey Mouse. Haring's market remains exceptionally robust; while major tarpaulins realized over $2.2M in late 2025, his Andy Mouse prints reached a record $325,000 in early 2025. These are considered the "pinnacle" of his printmaking career.

Question: What are the "Subway Drawings"?

Answer: These were original chalk drawings done in situ on black paper in the NYC subway. Because they were ephemeral street art, most were destroyed, but the few that were "vetted" and salvaged are now prized museum pieces. We use our 40 years of experience to verify the provenance of any original drawing in your collection.

Question: What is the "Mei Moses" record for Haring’s market?

Answer: Sotheby's Mei Moses indices show that resold Haring works have an average annual return of over 13%. This makes him one of the most stable "Blue Chip" investments. High-value targets include the Dancing Dogs and Andy Mouse series.

Question: How do "Estate-Stamped" prints differ from "Hand-Signed" ones?

Answer: Haring died young, so many prints on the market are "Estate Signed" (signed by Julia Gruen). While these are authentic, a print hand-signed by Keith Haring himself during his lifetime typically commands 3 to 5 times the price of an estate-stamped version.

Question: Are his "Subway Drawings" actually for sale

Answer: Most "Subway Drawings" (chalk on black paper) are in museums or permanent collections. If you find one for sale, it requires iron-clad provenance, as these were originally "street art" and not intended for the traditional gallery market.

Question: How do "Vetted Consignment" and "Vetted Dealer Network" listings differ?

Answer: At Herndon Fine Art, we believe in actual conversation. Vetted Consignments (RH code) are pieces sourced from private estates—often original 1980s Soho collectors—that we have physically inspected. Vetted Dealer Network (TAC or AE) listings come from our trusted partners. Regardless of the source, our reputation stands behind every signature.

Question: Why should I consult with Herndon Fine Art for a Haring purchase?

Answer: Because Haring’s imagery is so ubiquitous, the market is flooded with mass-produced posters and unauthorized reproductions. We use our 40 years of experience to identify official Littmann or Cantz catalogue raisonne references and verify the paper weight and ink types. We don't do "shopping cart" sales; we want to talk with you directly to ensure you are acquiring a verified, investment-grade piece of history.
